LSVT BIG® Moving Bigger, Living Better

Living with Parkinson’s Means Adapting Every Day

What Is LSVT BIG®?

LSVT BIG is an evidence-based therapy program developed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease. It is the movement-based companion to LSVT LOUD®, the world-renowned voice therapy program.

It’s not about theatricality or exaggeration. It’s about teaching your brain and body that what feels “big” is, in fact, the normal movement your body needs to stay mobile and strong.

Why LSVT BIG Works

The science behind LSVT BIG rests on two key ideas:

🌱 Neuroplasticity – The brain is capable of forming new connections and learning new habits, even after disease or injury. With high-effort, repetitive practice, people with Parkinson’s can “retrain” their brains to send bigger, more powerful signals to their muscles.

🌱 Sensory Recalibration – Parkinson’s often alters proprioception, the body’s internal sense of size and effort. What feels “normal” to someone with Parkinson’s may actually be too small. LSVT BIG helps recalibrate that sense so movements match what the body truly needs.

Every person’s journey with Parkinson’s is unique, but research and clinical practice show that LSVT BIG can make a real difference in many areas:

  • Walking: Increased stride length, better arm swing, faster gait speed.
  • Balance: Improved stability and reduced fall risk.
  • Posture: Standing taller and moving more confidently.
  • Everyday tasks: Getting in and out of chairs, dressing, cooking, and other activities of daily living.
  • Freezing episodes: Reduction in “getting stuck” moments when walking.
  • Confidence: A sense of control, independence, and hope.

Who Can Benefit from LSVT BIG?

LSVT BIG is designed for people with Parkinson’s disease, at many different stages of the condition:

What the Program Looks Like

LSVT BIG is structured, intensive, and designed for maximum impact.

  • Frequency: 4 times a week
  • Duration: 4 weeks (16 sessions total)
  • Format: One-on-one sessions with a certified LSVT BIG therapist
  • Homework: Daily practice at home, with exercises that take about 30 minutes
  • Focus: High-effort, large-amplitude movements that are integrated into real-life tasks
  1. Maximal Daily Exercises: Foundational “big” movements practiced repetitively (like reaching, stepping, and stretching).
  2. Functional Component Tasks: Everyday actions (like buttoning a shirt, getting into bed, or standing from a chair) practiced with “big” effort.
  3. Hierarchy Tasks: More complex activities that matter to the individual (like gardening, shopping, or playing with grandchildren).

Tips for Success in LSVT BIG

🌟 Show up fully. Commit to the 4-weeks intensive schedule—it’s what helps retrain the brain.
🌟 Practice daily. The home program keeps the momentum going between sessions.
🌟 Think BIG all day. Apply the concept to everyday life—when reaching for a cup, walking to the mailbox, or climbing stairs.
🌟 Make your space safe. Clear walkways, secure rugs, and arrange your environment to support practice.
🌟 Lean on support. Caregivers, family, and friends can provide encouragement and reminders.

Facing Challenges

It’s natural to have ups and downs. Some days you may feel strong, and others may feel harder. That’s part of Parkinson’s, and part of being human.

You may notice:

  • Fatigue after intensive sessions.
  • Fluctuations with medication timing.
  • Plateaus, where progress seems to stall.
